I have given Luke and Emma the GREAT responsibility of walking home by themselves. Matt has been teasing me that I am way too overprotective, and I decided I needed to show them I trust them.....so they don't get to walk ALL the way home, but very close. I have seen way to many kids crossing dangerously over our little busy street and so they walk parallel until they reach our street and then I meet them at the stop sign and help them cross. So they are just five houses away and I help them cross and then they are home.
It has worked out great, with the exception of a couple of days ago...Luke got a little sidetracked at the park on the way home. He saw his buddies playing football and stopped to play. Emma tried to warn him that I would be worried, but he gave her the old "5 minutes...". So cute little Emma sat there and read her book and patiently waited for Luke. 5 minutes turned into about 20. So here I am sitting there at the stop sign waiting for them getting VERY worried. Finally Gavin and I jumped into the car and raced to find them. They were on their way back and when they saw me pull up and the look on my face, they both burst into tears and started apologizing profusely when I told them they no longer get to walk home because they broke my trust. After I settled down about it, we calmly discussed how worried they made me and that if they were going to get the responsibility of walking home, they had to keep my trust. So I have continued to let them walk and I think they learned their lesson. :) It is going to be so nice once the baby comes to have them walking. Things are already changing around here! My kids are growing up!!!
