A day of volunteering...

Today was such a fun day...I got to go and volunteer in Luke's classroom. All I did was sit and cut out things for the teacher, and yet I had the BEST time! The kids were away at the computer lab when I first got there and so I had a chance to visit with Mrs. Lipsit. She said such nice things about Luke. She said he tries so hard and she loves the twinkle in his eyes when he just figured something out or when he learns something new that he is excited about. She was impressed with his reading and she said he is a good listener and she never has problems with him in class. Every mom's dream to hear those things about her child!

I got to sit and see how his sweet teacher interacts with them. She calls them all her "friends" and she is so loving with them. I can see why they all respect her so much, because she respects them! She was always saying her please and thank yous and the kids respond to her VERY well. It just so happened that today was Luke's FIRST actual spelling test, up to this point they have been doing practice tests. So it is so fun that I was there for it! We practiced hard all week and even this morning just before school. She said the first word and I couldn't help but look across the room to see if Luke was writing. His back was to me and after he got done he turned around and gave me a thumbs up...right after his teacher said "No looking around the room" :)

I stayed until lunch and I got to sit and eat lunch with Luke. If the parents come for lunch they have to sit outside in the inner court area with their child. I almost teared up, it is not very often that you get to sit one on one in a quiet setting and just talk. I don't get to do this very often because of Gavin, so it was nice of my friend Colleen to watch him so I could be at the school today!

Right after that I ran to Emma's school to meet with her teacher to plan the Halloween party for her class. Fun, fun!

What fun! And those kinds of reports about your kids are a parent's dream, aren't they? I always looked forward to parent-teacher conference for that reason!
Good for Luke and good for you!
Love,
Wendy

Sar,

Volunteering is the best! I have found throughout the years that as much as it means to you, it means even more to your kids. Pretty soon no one will know your name, you will be known as Luke or Emma's Mom. The best title ever.

Love you!

Heidi

P.S. Be careful, I see PTA President in your future! Don't worry, I have detailed files.

Volunteering is one of the best parts of motherhood as far as I'm concerned. I love how proud my kids are when I come into a room. It's really fun to hear them say, "That's my mom!" As the years go by I find that I know most of the kids in their classes and when we see them in the community (at the movies or the store, etc.) it's fun to have them say hi. Then I can meet their parents and make a connection.

Also, there have been studies that have shown the children whose parents volunteer do better academically and socially than their peers. Having been a teacher, I can say that knowing the parents of a student definitely helps keep that student's needs on the front burner. It's just human nature, I guess.

Anyway, sorry for the mondo long comment, but I'm so happy that you get to be there for your kids.
